Starbucks announces they will be banning plastic straws in all stores by 2020!

Sea turtle in blue ocean - Starbucks is banning plastic in all stores worldwide citing ocean animals conservation
Posted on

A few years ago, I saw this viral YouTube video of a sea turtle with a plastic straw lodged in its nostril (*video warning: graphic content and strong language). It was hard to watch because the turtle was obviously in a lot of pain, but the video brought attention to the amountSea turtle in blue ocean - Starbucks is banning plastic in all stores worldwide citing ocean animals conservation of plastic waste that ends up in our oceans. Starbucks choosing to stop using plastic straws is great news for the environment and will likely reduce the amount of plastic in the ocean.

Did you know that by 2050, if we continue using plastic like we are now, researchers estimate that plastic will outnumber fish in the ocean? It's clear that we need to cut down our plastic consumption.

One immediate & easy way to do this is to, like Starbucks, say no to plastic straws. Over 500 million plastic straws are used each day in America alone and a majority of them end up in the ocean, even if they’re put in a recycling bin, because they're too small and slip through the cracks at recycling centers, after which they end up with regular waste. Not only does this lead to ocean pollution, but it also leads to the harming and killing of ocean animals. A shocking 71% of seabirds and 30% of sea turtles are found with plastic in their stomachs. For those who care about the conservation of the ocean and its inhabitants, this should be a huge wake up call.

Hopefully Starbucks' decision to stop using plastic straws will draw more attention to the issue and encourage more people and companies to stop using plastic as well. This is an easy change to make; simply switch to the many alternatives of plastic straws like:

• Metal reusable straws
• Paper straws
• Bamboo straws
• Glass straws

And when you go out, make sure you let your waiter know you won't need a straw.
